Just a little update

It’s been a minute! I can’t believe the first quarter of the year is already done.

From Trailseeker to the Ceder, to almost a WP XCO… what a couple of months it has been.

I feel beyond blessed to be able to ride again, but this journey definitely comes with its own rollercoaster—and no manual.

I’ve started noticing my heart again, especially when temperatures climb above 30°C. After asking a few more questions, it seems that although my recovery has gone really well, my heart is still only functioning at around 70% of where it should be. So… it’s back to the drawing board.

I’m currently looking into getting authorization to start a cardiac rehabilitation program. It sounds intense—and it probably will be—but we’ll see what the specialists say. To be honest, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to race again. Right now, the most important thing is making sure I have a happy, healthy, fully operational ticker.

From what I understand, this rehab process could take another year. I’ve tried rushing it before, and that didn’t work. This time, I’m choosing to do it properly.

What that means for my racing career… I honestly don’t know.

It’s been a challenging time—mentally, physically, and emotionally. I’ve lost part of my identity, and I’m learning how to rebuild and reshape myself.

But what I do know is this: I love being active. Beyond racing, I truly love being an athlete. Pushing my body, exploring its limits, and using it to its full potential is a gift I once took for granted—and one I would love to keep for as long as I can.

And that’s not even touching on how much motherhood has changed my life. That’s probably why I’m writing my book.

For now, I’m simply enjoying my bike again. The time I get to ride and take part in events is something I don’t take lightly anymore—it’s pure joy.

I was meant to ride the GreytOnion MTB race in Greyton this weekend, but with the rain and the news I received yesterday, I’m choosing to give myself the weekend to reset.

Next up is Tour de Addo in August—what a privilege that will be.

The rest of the year is still taking shape. On the plus side, I now get to experience events I never had time for before.

For now: process, reshape, refocus.

Thank you for following along and for all the support. I’m excited (and a little nervous) to discover what this next chapter holds.

In the meantime, if you ever need coaching or would like to commission a painting, I’m here.

See you out there,

Man I love racing my bike!
Man I love racing my bike!

Mariske
